How to Evaluate Sources: A Framework for the Information Age
Knowing how to evaluate sources is one of the most valuable skills you can develop in an era where anyone can publish anything instantly. The volume of information available to us has never been greater, and neither has the volume of misinformation, half-truths, and agenda-driven content dressed up to look credible. The problem is not just that bad information exists — it is that most people lack a systematic way to test what they read before they believe it, share it, or act on it. Why We Accept Weak Sources in the First Place
Before building a framework, it helps to understand why we need one. Human brains were not designed for the modern information environment. We evolved to process information from a small, trusted community. Today we consume content from thousands of sources simultaneously, and our cognitive hardware has not kept up.

Studies by Hasher, Goldstein, and Toppino (1977), later replicated extensively, demonstrated that people rate familiar statements as more likely to be true even when they were told the statements might be false. Repetition mimics evidence in the brain’s accounting system.
The Core Problem: Signals We Use Are Often Wrong
Most people evaluate sources using a handful of unreliable signals. They check whether the writing sounds professional. They look for a named author. They see how many people have shared the article. None of these reliably indicate accuracy.
Social proof — the assumption that something widely shared or liked must be trustworthy — is particularly dangerous online. Research published in Science (Vosoughi, Roy, and Aral, 2018) found that false news spreads faster and wider on social media than true news, largely because false stories tend to be more novel and emotionally arousing. The things most likely to go viral are often the things least likely to be accurate.
Similarly, domain name and website design are manipulated deliberately. Sophisticated disinformation operations routinely clone the visual identity of reputable institutions. A URL that looks official is not evidence that a site is official.
A Practical Framework: The SIFT Method and Beyond
The most teachable framework for evaluating sources currently in use is the SIFT method, developed by media literacy researcher Mike Caulfield. SIFT stands for Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, and Trace claims to their origin. It is worth walking through each step.
- Stop. Before reading, sharing, or reacting, pause. Notice if you feel a strong emotional pull — outrage, excitement, vindication. Strong emotion is a signal to slow down, not speed up. Emotionally charged content is frequently engineered to bypass critical evaluation.
- Investigate the source. Before reading the content itself, find out who produced it. Open a new tab and search the publication or author name alongside words like “bias,” “funding,” or “review.” Use lateral reading — checking what other sources say about the source rather than just reading what the source says about itself.
- Find better coverage. If a claim matters, look for corroboration from multiple independent sources. Independence is key. Five outlets all citing the same original wire service report is not five pieces of evidence — it is one piece of evidence cited five times.
- Trace claims to their origin. Statistics, quotes, and study findings are frequently distorted as they travel. Find the primary source — the actual study, the original speech, the raw data. You will often discover the original says something meaningfully different from how it is being reported.
Beyond SIFT, two additional lenses strengthen your evaluation.
Funding and incentive analysis asks who benefits if you believe this. Research consistently shows that industry-funded studies produce results favourable to funders at rates far exceeding chance (Bekelman, Li, and Gross, 2003, found industry-sponsored studies were significantly more likely to reach pro-industry conclusions). This does not automatically invalidate a study, but it is a variable that must be weighted.
Methodology scrutiny means asking how the evidence was gathered. Anecdote, survey, observational study, and randomised controlled trial (RCT) are not equally reliable. An RCT — where participants are randomly assigned to conditions — is the gold standard for establishing cause and effect. Observational studies can show correlation but cannot alone prove causation. A single expert’s opinion is weaker evidence than a systematic review of multiple studies.
A Real-World Example: The Vaccine-Autism Claim
The persistence of the claim that childhood vaccines cause autism illustrates nearly every failure mode in source evaluation. The claim originated from a 1998 paper by Andrew Wakefield published in The Lancet. Applying the framework reveals its weakness at every level.
Tracing to the origin: the study involved only 12 children — a sample too small to draw population-level conclusions. Investigating the source: Wakefield had undisclosed financial conflicts of interest; he was being paid by lawyers seeking evidence against vaccine manufacturers. Finding better coverage: dozens of large-scale independent studies involving millions of children have found no link. Methodology scrutiny: Wakefield’s study was later found to contain falsified data. The Lancet retracted the paper in 2010, and Wakefield lost his medical licence.
Despite all of this, the claim continues to circulate because it was emotionally resonant, it was repeated endlessly (triggering the illusory truth effect), and many people never applied the basic evaluation steps outlined above. The social cost — measles outbreaks in previously vaccinated populations — has been measurable and serious.

Information quantity is no longer the problem. Evaluation quality is. A systematic approach to assessing sources — applied consistently, even when inconvenient — is among the most protective habits you can develop for your own reasoning.
