Resisting anecdotal evidence doesn’t mean dismissing personal experience entirely. It means giving it proportional weight. Here’s how to do that.

  • Ask about the base rate. How often does the thing in question actually happen across a large population? One person’s experience has to be understood against that background. The smoker who lived to 95 is real — but the base rate of smoking-related illness and early death is also real, and vastly more relevant to your decision.
  • Look for systematic evidence. Are there controlled studies, meta-analyses, or large observational datasets on this topic? If so, they should carry significantly more weight than individual cases, because they’re designed to account for the variables that personal stories can’t control.
  • Identify the survivorship bias. You only hear from people whose stories are available to tell. The business that failed, the treatment that didn’t work, the investment that lost money — those stories are underrepresented. Ask yourself: who isn’t in this sample?
  • Slow down the emotional response. When a story moves you, that’s the exact moment to pause before updating your beliefs. Emotional resonance is not correlated with evidential reliability.
  • Distinguish between illustration and proof. An anecdote can legitimately illustrate a point that evidence already supports. What it cannot do is establish the point on its own.
