The Limits of the Solution

It’s worth being honest about what breaking out of an echo chamber does and doesn’t achieve. Exposure to opposing views doesn’t automatically produce understanding or better reasoning. Research by sociologist Christopher Bail found that when Twitter users were exposed to opposing political viewpoints through a bot-driven study, they often became more entrenched in their original positions, not less. Simply being shown different information is not sufficient if you haven’t also built the habit of evaluating it fairly.
